I was listening to a few specific Johnny Cash songs when I wrote this, and a lot of Mitski.
An old friend of mine
Gave me his best advice.
He said whenever my mind goes to you,
To breathe out deep and smile.
I thanked him for his time,
And said that I would try.
But as the day wore on, I realized
I can't forever hold a smile.
The only colors I see
Are black, white, gray, and dark blue.
The sun doesn't shine as brightly
On days I'm without you.
Do you remember holding hands?
How your fingers, they stroked mine
At the still pond that I wrote about
As the tears welled in our eyes.
Do you remember how you cried
When you heard my secret song?
Hand in hand outside the theater,
Is that not where you belong?
Now that you're far away
My days don't have a dawn.
An ugly dusk is all I see
Oh now that you are gone.
